Incorporated in 1989, the Kentuckiana Blues Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving, promoting, and perpetuating the Blues tradition. KBS is an affiliate member of the Blues Foundation, and one of the oldest continuously operating blues societies in the country. Our members receive our monthly newsletter, The Blues News, as well as a weekly email calendar; we also email news of any late breaking events and appearances.
Members of the Kentuckiana Blues Society played a key role in launching the Garvin Gate Blues Festival in 1988, and in 2010, the Germantown Schnitzelburg Blues Festival. Both are free to the public and unite our community through music presented by local and national artists. In addition, the KBS collaborates with other organizations to sponsor and support most of our local and regional blues festivals.
The annual KBS Blues Challenge is a qualifying round of the Blues Foundation's prestigious International Blues Challenge, held annually on legendary Beale Street in Memphis, TN. The competition, typically held in late summer at Stevie Ray's Blues Bar, includes categories for Bands, Solo/Duo acts, and Youth performers, and the winners are presented with a prize package including premium recording time and funds for travel expenses. There is also a non-performance category for Best Self-Produced CD, and the winner is announced at the International Blues Challenge as part of their mission to ensure the future of this uniquely American art form
The Kentuckiana Blues Society (KBS) has made significant progress in documenting Kentucky’s Blues tradition through extensive research. This work has uncovered rare photos, interviews, and the locations of early Blues-related sites. Additionally, the organization has identified the grave sites of Blues legends Sylvester Weaver, Bill Gaither, and Sara Martin, funding and placing headstones to honor their legacy..
From its inception the KBS has been actively involved on the local Blues scene. Many local and regional talents have been showcased in local venues under either direct sponsorship or contributed support of the KBS. Such artists as Albert Collins, Pinetop Perkins, and Henry Townsend were all able to appear in Louisville under the auspices of KBS.
Probably the strongest commitment that KBS has is its efforts to perpetuate the Blues Tradition so that generations to come may be able to know and appreciate the Blues. In a way, this perpetuation encompasses the other two "p"s of our mission: it is through the preservation and presentation of the Blues that we can begin to perpetuate it. One of the ways in which KBS perpetuates the Blues is through the annual presentation of the Sylvester Weaver Award to an individual in recognition of their efforts in representing the mission of the KBS.
KBS encourages membership by anyone interested in the Blues. Members receive our monthly newsletter Blues News, as well as opportunities for discounts on local events and purchases. All members are encouraged to attend the monthly meetings of the Society to bring their own views and talents to the support of the Blues. The KBS Board meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm. Members are welcome.
